Conscious Sedation with Nitrous Oxide

Conscious dental sedation is a controlled relaxation technique using nitrous oxide inhalation that allows the patient to undergo any dental treatment in a state of deep well-being. It reduces anxiety and pain perception without losing consciousness or the ability to communicate at any time.

Fear of the dentist leads thousands of people to postpone essential visits for years, accumulating oral health problems that could have been treated in time with a simple intervention. This vicious cycle —fear, avoidance, deterioration, more complex intervention, more fear— has a solution from the very first visit with conscious sedation.

At Asensio Dental Clinic, Dr. Lucía Asensio Romero (Registration No. 46002287) applies conscious sedation under the direct supervision of our in-house anesthesiologist, using the Masterflux Plus system with Italian technology. The first visit is completely free and includes an assessment with digital orthopantomography and an intraoral scanner.

How does conscious sedation with nitrous oxide work?

Nitrous oxide —popularly known as laughing gas— is the agent used at Asensio Dental Clinic to induce conscious sedation in a safe and controlled manner. It is administered through a nasal mask that the patient wears throughout the treatment, inhaling a calibrated mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide. The proportion of gases is continuously adjusted by the anesthesiologist according to the patient’s response, ensuring the optimal level of sedation at all times.

The effect begins within 2-3 minutes: the patient notices a progressive sensation of warmth and relaxation spreading through the body, thoughts slow down, the emotional burden associated with the dental environment decreases, and the perception of time is slightly altered. The patient remains conscious and can respond to the dentist’s instructions at all times — they can open their mouth, indicate if they have any discomfort, and communicate normally. When the mask is removed at the end of the treatment, the effect disappears completely within 5-10 minutes, and the patient can go home on their own without needing a companion.

Effective dental sedation must meet specific clinical criteria: efficiently reduce nervous tension and anxiety, enhance the action of local anesthetics, minimize involuntary movements that hinder treatment, produce a certain degree of amnesia regarding the procedures, and use drugs with rapid metabolism and minimal residual effects. Nitrous oxide meets all these criteria and has been used for decades with an excellent safety record in countries like the United States, Denmark, Australia, and France, where dentistry routinely works in collaboration with anesthesiology.

Which patients is conscious sedation indicated for?

Conscious sedation is indicated for any patient who experiences anxiety or fear regarding dental treatment, regardless of whether that fear is mild or severe. It is not necessary to have a clinical phobia to benefit from it: many patients who simply feel uncomfortable in the dental chair discover through conscious sedation that treatment can be a completely different experience.

The patient profiles that benefit most from conscious sedation are those suffering from established dental phobia —odontophobia— which has prevented them from visiting the dentist for years; patients with an exacerbated gag reflex that makes procedures in the back of the mouth difficult; those needing long treatments or multiple interventions in a single session; children who have difficulty cooperating in the chair; and patients with special needs who require a differentiated protocol. For these latter cases, please also consult our page on care for special needs patients.

Conscious sedation with nitrous oxide is compatible with standard local anesthesia —it actually enhances it— and can be applied to patients of all ages, including children from 3-4 years old. It is contraindicated for pregnant women in the first trimester, patients with severe nasal obstruction that prevents breathing through the nose, and in some specific neurological or psychiatric conditions that the specialist will assess during the first visit.

Price of conscious sedation in Valencia

The price of conscious dental sedation is not fixed because it depends on the type of treatment to be performed, its duration, and the specific needs of each patient. A short session for fillings under sedation has a very different cost than a full rehabilitation or implant surgery. Therefore, we do not provide generic prices: the exact cost is always included in the detailed quote we prepare during the first free visit, before the patient has to commit to anything.

What we can say is that conscious sedation at Asensio Dental Clinic is not a luxury reserved for a few: it is an option we systematically offer to all patients who need it, with the peace of mind that it is administered by an in-house anesthesiologist and not just the dentist.

Frequently Asked Questions about conscious sedation

Is conscious sedation safe?

Yes. Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for decades with an excellent safety record. It does not produce loss of consciousness, the patient can communicate at all times, and the effect disappears completely within 5-10 minutes after removing the mask. At Asensio Dental Clinic, it is administered under the direct supervision of our anesthesiologist using the Masterflux Plus system, with continuous monitoring of vital signs.

Can I drive after conscious sedation?

Yes. Unlike intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, the effect of nitrous oxide disappears completely within 5-10 minutes after the mask is removed. The patient can go home on their own, without needing a companion, and can drive without any limitations.

Can it be combined with local anesthesia?

Yes, and in fact, it is standard practice. Conscious sedation reduces anxiety and pain perception but does not completely eliminate sensation — that is why it is always combined with local anesthesia to ensure the treatment is completely painless. Sedation also enhances the effect of local anesthetics, so in many cases, less amount is needed.

Is conscious sedation indicated for children?

Yes, from 3-4 years of age. Nitrous oxide is very safe for children and is especially useful for those who have difficulty cooperating in the chair or those who need several treatments in a single session. The protocol is adapted to the patient’s age and weight.
