What are Invisible Braces? Types and Advantages

Escrito por: Dr. José Luis Lanuza

Invisible or clear braces are a type of fixed orthodontics designed to correct tooth position with the least possible visual impact. Unlike conventional metal braces, they are made from materials such as ceramic, sapphire, or zirconia that replicate the natural color of the enamel, making the braces practically imperceptible to the naked eye.

Choosing between invisible braces and other orthodontic systems without clear information is one of the most frequent mistakes patients make before their first consultation. Knowing the differences between materials, their real advantages, and their limitations allows you to approach the orthodontist with criteria and make an informed decision about your treatment.

At Asensio Dental Clinic, we have been performing aesthetic braces treatments in Valencia for over 20 years. All cases are planned and supervised by Dr. José Luis Lanuza (Registration No. 46002399), an orthodontics specialist with extensive experience in aesthetic systems. In this guide, you will find everything you need to know about invisible braces — materials, advantages, limitations, and differences with other orthodontic systems.

What are invisible braces?

Invisible braces are fixed orthodontic devices made of translucent or tooth-colored materials that significantly reduce the visual impact of the treatment compared to conventional metal braces. Their function is identical to any fixed orthodontics — a metal wire connects the brackets and exerts controlled pressure on the teeth to progressively move them toward the desired position.

The term “invisible braces” is actually an inexact popular name. Ceramic, sapphire, or zirconia braces are discreet — they go practically unnoticed in normal conversations — but they are not completely invisible if you look closely. For truly invisible orthodontics, there are two alternatives: clear aligners like Invisalign, which are removable, and lingual orthodontics, where the braces are placed on the inner surface of the teeth and are impossible to see from the outside.

Types of invisible braces by material

Within aesthetic braces, there are four main materials, each with its own characteristics in terms of aesthetics, resistance, and cost. Choosing the most suitable one depends on the clinical needs of the case and the patient’s personal preferences.

Ceramic Braces They blend in with the tooth color and are stain-resistant. They are the most common choice among aesthetic braces due to their balance of discretion, resistance, and cost. They may acquire slight staining from highly pigmented foods if hygiene is not rigorous.
Sapphire Braces They are transparent and more resistant than ceramic ones. Being monocrystalline, they do not accumulate pigmentation over time, staying discreet throughout the treatment. They are the most aesthetic option among outward-facing braces.
Zirconia Braces They offer great mechanical resistance and a natural appearance very similar to dental enamel. They are especially indicated in cases requiring greater durability during long treatments.
Polycarbonate Braces The most economical option among aesthetic braces, although less resistant than the previous ones. They are used less frequently due to their greater tendency to discolor and deform over time.

Advantages of invisible braces vs. metal ones

Discretion They go practically unnoticed in social and professional settings, especially sapphire and zirconia ones.
Same clinical efficacy The material of the bracket does not affect the tooth movement capability. They correct the same problems with the same results as metal ones.
Patient independence As they are fixed, the treatment progresses continuously 24 hours a day without the patient having to manage anything.
Compatible with complex cases Unlike some aligner systems, aesthetic braces allow for resolving severe malocclusions with the same level of control as metal braces.

Limitations of invisible braces

Aesthetic braces present some limitations compared to metal ones that are worth knowing before deciding. They are generally somewhat more fragile — ceramic and porcelain ones can chip under direct impacts or very hard foods — and have a greater tendency to stain if hygiene is not rigorous, especially those that use elastic ligatures to hold the wire.

The solution to ligature staining is aesthetic self-ligating braces, which eliminate ligatures through a clip system integrated into the bracket itself. By not having ligatures, they maintain their discretion better throughout the treatment and also reduce friction on the wire, resulting in more efficient tooth movements.

Invisible braces vs. completely invisible orthodontics

It is important to distinguish between aesthetic braces — discreet but visible up close — and truly invisible orthodontic systems. Ceramic or sapphire braces are placed on the outer face of the teeth and are perceptible if you look. For completely invisible orthodontics, there are two alternatives:

Invisalign uses practically imperceptible removable clear aligners even up close, but requires usage discipline and may have limitations in complex cases. Lingual orthodontics places the braces on the internal face of the teeth, being completely invisible from the outside and effective even in highly complex cases.

Frequently asked questions about invisible braces

Do invisible braces stain?

It depends on the material. Sapphire braces are monocrystalline and practically do not accumulate pigmentation. Ceramic and porcelain ones can acquire slight staining from highly pigmented foods and drinks like coffee, red wine, or curry, especially if hygiene is not rigorous. The elastic ligatures holding the wire stain more easily — in self-ligating systems, this problem does not exist as they don’t need ligatures.

Are invisible braces more fragile than metal ones?

Generally yes, although the difference varies by material. Sapphire and zirconia ones are quite resistant and rarely fracture under normal use. Ceramic and porcelain ones are somewhat more fragile and can chip if they receive a direct impact or if the patient bites very hard foods. A broken bracket does not interrupt the treatment — it is replaced at the next control visit.

Can invisible braces be put on all teeth?

Usually, aesthetic braces are placed on the front teeth — the most visible — and metal braces on the back molars, where resistance is more important than aesthetics. In some cases, it is possible to place aesthetic braces on the entire arch, although the orthodontist will evaluate if it is the most suitable option according to the case characteristics.

What is the difference between invisible braces and invisible orthodontics?

Invisible or aesthetic braces are discreet but visible if you look closely — they are on the outer face of the teeth. Truly invisible orthodontics encompasses two distinct systems: clear aligners like Invisalign, which are removable and practically imperceptible, and lingual orthodontics, where the braces are placed on the inner face of the teeth and are impossible to see from the outside.

How much do invisible braces cost?

The price varies according to the chosen material and the complexity of the case. Ceramic braces are the most economical among aesthetic ones, while sapphire and zirconia have a higher cost.
