At Asensio Advanced Dentistry dental clinic, we know that there are dozens of toothpastes on the market advertising a whitening effect. Today, we are not going to talk about the composition of these types of toothpastes—which are usually more aggressive than normal ones—but about the actual effects they have on teeth.
Recently, the OCU (Organization of Consumers and Users) conducted a study on the matter. And the verdict could not be more revealing. 30 volunteers used 15 different whitening toothpastes for a month to analyze the results. The conclusion: No improvement is noticed in any case, as the teeth change color “very little or not at all.”
Regardless of the brand or price, toothpastes do not seem to be an effective solution as whiteners. In fact, after conducting the studies, the OCU recommends that no toothpaste should be called whitening. The organization has called on authorities to be more demanding with brands that advertise a whitening effect in their toothpastes.
Among the toothpaste brands, a ranking was also made to find out which ones at least had some effect. Surprisingly, price had nothing to do with the results. The best rating was obtained by Binaca Whitening, while the Oral B 3D White Luxe Perfection was in last place. However, even in the best-case scenario, we must say that the results were not at all as expected: barely 10 out of 30 subjects experienced an improvement of 1 or 2 shades.
